Six hundred runners and walkers registered to pound their way down Millbrook Avenue, through Randolph Trails, and back up to Randolph High School, to compete in the second annual Randolph Rocks 5K Run on Saturday, June 18. The race brought the community together on a picture-perfect day, raising over $26,000 for the Randolph Education Foundation.
The 5K competitors took off at 8:30 a.m. with first place winner Ken Goglas crossing the finish line in 16:21. Second place went to Geoff McGrane who ran the course in 16:45, with third place awarded to Conor Higgins, who finished at 17:17. The first woman runner to cross the finish line was Meaghan Driscoll at 20:50; Cassandra Harust finished second at 21:34; and Diane Ross came in third at 21:40.
RHS gym teacher Nick Albanito was the first male Randolph teacher to cross the finish line. He showed he could keep up with the kids by running the 5K in 17:21. The first female Randolph teacher to finish the race was RMS teacher Emily Schaeffer, who ran the race in 23:23. The first male and female Randolph residents to cross the finish line were Nick Macri in 17:35 and Judith Petit in 23:28. Awards were also given to the top male and female finishers in nine age categories. Full results are listed at www.randolpheducationfoundation.org.
In addition to awards for top runners, REF offered numerous door prizes, drawing winning numbers at random. The top prize, a BMW Cruise Bike valued at over $1100 and donated by BMW of Roxbury, was won by Sheryl Rothman.
The 5K Race is an annual event hosted by the Randolph Education Foundation. A team of more than sixty volunteers manned registration tables, kept runners on course as they wound their way through roads, trails and track, and served up refreshments and water before, during and after the run. RHS students in bands Men Working in Trees, Miles Ahead and Tell the Press provided live music along the way and the very helpful Brownie Troop 136 manned the water stop.
“We deeply appreciate the efforts of our volunteers and the generosity of our sponsors,” said Race Director and REF Board Member Andrew Vasta. “We especially want to thank the REA for their banner sponsorship and for the many REA members who participated in the run. We also want to thank our partner sponsor Willis Benefits and Insurance.”
More than 60 local companies and businesses helped support this event, including Gold Sponsors: Curtiss Wright, John Herold Jewelers, Solutions Architects and TD Bank; Bronze Sponsors: Birdsall Engineering and Mara Physical Therapy; Special Area Sponsors: Absolute Resource Solutions, Benkendorf Industries, Inc., County
College of Morris, John Herold Jewelers, Dan Limone Painting, The Rotary Club of Randolph and Woodruff Construction; Volunteer T-Shirt Sponsor Jefferson Diner; and Water Bottle Sponsor Harbor Hills Day Camp.
“Everyone involved in the race thoroughly enjoyed their morning and most importantly, the REF raised over $26,000 to benefit Randolph students,” noted REF President Margaret Clark. “We look forward to an even bigger race next year, and hope we get the same excitement and community support for our first fall event, Randolph Rock Stars. That event is co-sponsored by Randolph Rotary, will take place on November 3, and honors thirteen individuals who have made Randolph a better place for our upcoming generation of students. We’ll have more information about Randolph Rock Stars available soon.”
